Tariff Arbitrage

Charge at ~8p/kWh off-peak, use at ~28p/kWh peak. Needs a smart/EV tariff like Octopus Go — saves roughly £250–£550/year without solar.

Solar Storage

Store excess solar for evening use instead of exporting at ~12p. Lifts self-consumption from ~35% toward 75%+.

8–13 Year Payback

On 2026 prices and tariffs, payback runs 8–13 years and hinges on the peak/off-peak spread. Batteries last 10–15 years.

Estimates are indicative and based on UK average electricity rates as of July 2026 (Ofgem cap 26.1p/kWh, smart-tariff off-peak ~8p, SEG export ~12p). Actual savings depend on your tariff, usage patterns, solar orientation, and weather. We assume one full charge/discharge cycle per day, 90% round-trip efficiency, ~330 effective cycles/year, ~2%/year capacity fade across the 10-year figure, and cap savings at your annual bill.

Smaller backup options

Not ready for a £4–10k installed battery? Portable LiFePO4 power stations cover outages, sheds, and renting. £119–£599.
